Skiing in Syterskalet

Syterskalet is developing into a new ski area in Hemavan - offering varied skiing from the open mountain terrain down through mountain birch forests and further towards the valley. Modern ski runs and lifts are being created here, making skiing more accessible for both families and experienced skiers.

The area and location
Syterskalet is set to become Hemavan’s next major ski area, offering varied skiing from open alpine terrain down through the characteristic mountain birch forest and into the valley. New ski runs are being shaped along natural lines, designed for both families and more experienced skiers. The first run opened in the 2022/23 season and connects the top of the Kungsliften with the valley station of the Hemavan Gondola – a long, continuous piste without transport sections.
Skiing in Hemavan and Syterskalet
Hemavan is one of Sweden’s most established ski resorts, offering a unique combination of open mountain terrain, tree skiing and expansive views. The alpine offering includes multiple lifts, an extensive piste network and vertical drop suitable for both beginners and advanced skiers.

Adjacent to this, Syterskalet is taking shape – a new area where skiing, accommodation and a village centre are planned as one connected system. The vision is to create a modern mountain destination where skiing is a natural part of everyday life, year-round.

Alpine, cross-country and ski touring in one mountain area
Hemavan offers a complete skiing experience. Here you’ll find alpine runs both above and below the tree line, a snowpark, children’s areas and off-piste terrain in the open mountains. For those looking to explore further, ski touring and backcountry terrain are directly accessible from the lift system.

Cross-country skiing is equally central to the area. Several kilometres of prepared trails wind through sheltered forest terrain as well as open mountain tracks overlooking valleys and peaks. The trail system connects Hemavan with the surrounding mountain landscape, offering both shorter loops and longer tours in classic alpine environments.

The combination of alpine skiing, cross-country and mountain touring makes Hemavan one of the most complete ski destinations in northern Sweden, with reliable snow conditions and a long season.
Syterskalet - the next step in Hemavan's ski development
Skiing in Syterskalet is being planned from the ground up, with direct links to Hemavan’s existing lift system. Several new lifts are planned for the area, with the first opening by Christmas 2026, alongside new runs and natural ski lines shaped by the terrain.

The goal is to create a fully integrated area where skiing begins and ends at your doorstep. Natural elevation changes, fall lines and connections to the gondola and existing lifts enable attractive ski-in/ski-out locations close to both accommodation and the future centre.

Connections to cross-country trails and winter routes are also planned, making it easy to head out directly from the area – whether you prefer alpine skiing, cross-country or ski touring.

As Syterskalet develops, Hemavan is further strengthened as a destination, with more beds, improved accessibility and a centre featuring restaurants, services and activities. Together, they form a modern mountain destination where skiing, nature and quality of life meet – with development carried out in harmony with the landscape.
