Discover Syterskalet - the alpine destination of the future in Hemavan

Syterskalet is Hemavan’s largest development ever - a new mountain area where upcoming lifts, ski runs, accommodation and trails will make the mountains accessible year-round. The area is emerging where the Syterbäcken valley meets the dramatic peaks of the Syter massif, with a future centre that brings together nature, sustainability and vibrant mountain living in every season.

Area and location
Syterskalet is a unique mountain landscape in Hemavan
Syterskalet is located in one of Hemavan’s most distinctive landscapes, where the open mountain plateaus meet sheltering mountain birch forests and the views stretch towards the Syter massif (highest peak: Norra Sytertoppen, 1,768 m above sea level) and the Norwegian mountains. The area follows the Syterbäcken valley and has a natural connection to the Kungsleden trail, which passes through the glacially formed U-shaped valley that gave Syterskalet its name.

The name reflects the landscape: skal as in an open space within the mountain terrain – a place where movement, water and trails converge. People have travelled through this landscape for generations. Now, the next chapter is being written.

New lifts and ski runs
Syterskalet’s first ski run opened in the 2022/23 season, and the first lift will be completed by Christmas 2026. The expansion will then continue with planned chairlifts and seven new ski runs, creating varied skiing from open mountain terrain down to the valley.
Homes and a vibrant centre
The area is growing with holiday homes, apartments and hotels - totalling up to 3,000 new beds. At the same time, a future centre is being developed with restaurants, shops, activity areas and an ice-skating rink, making Syterskalet lively all year round.
Architecture and Sustainable Development
With sustainability and long-term value at its core, Syterskalet is being built for the future. The plans include a new mountain restaurant designed by architect Hans Murman - a future landmark that reflects the surrounding nature and character of the mountains.
