Mountain hiking, the Kungsleden and local trails
The Kungsleden starts in Hemavan and continues north through valleys, across open mountain terrain and between alpine lakes. The first stage passes through the distinctive landscape towards Syterskalet and onwards to Viterskalet, offering expansive views and a strong sense of the scale and tranquillity of the mountains.
In addition to the Kungsleden, the Drottningleden connects Hemavan and Laisaliden – a well-known trail combining scenic views, accessibility and varied terrain. The surrounding area also offers numerous shorter trails, viewpoints and excursion destinations, making it easy to adapt your hike to time, weather and experience level.
Hiking in Hemavan is defined by close contact with nature, clearly marked trails and the ability to move through both sheltered mountain birch forests and open alpine terrain. In summer, the midnight sun provides long days, while autumn brings vivid colours and stillness.
Syterskalet – hiking directly from the area
In Syterskalet, hiking is planned as an integrated part of the area. New routes, paths and connections to existing trails will make it possible to access the mountain environment directly from homes and the future centre.
Located in the Syterbäcken valley and close to both the Kungsleden and open mountain terrain, the area offers excellent conditions for both short walks and longer hikes. You can go from an evening stroll along the stream to a full-day mountain hike, or continue north along the Kungsleden.
Within the design programme, there is a clear ambition to preserve the natural environment and create accessible, well-integrated walking paths that follow the landscape’s natural lines. This makes hiking not just an activity, but a natural part of everyday life in Syterskalet.
As the area develops with new homes, a centre and more visitors, Hemavan is further strengthened as a year-round destination where hiking, skiing and nature experiences come together in the same landscape.
